There is how ever a loop facility that will allow you to overlay several phrases onboard, though this is very different to full recording capability. The USB stick is designed for backing up the unit and for playing audio files, ie backing tracks, you cannot record to it, recording has to be done by either pluging the outputs into a multi track/digital multi track/studio desk or via USB to your DAW software on your computer. There is no flash card memory on the unit though it does accept USB sticks, check for the spec on the Roland site, There is also a third party GR-55 patch editor that works well, allowing you to program patches in real time from your PC, laptop or mac.

It also allows you to connect to the librarian software for managing patches, but be aware, the librarian is not drag & drop sadly, Roland really need to catch up with the rest of the world with their management software. USB out is handy and allows you to plug directly into your computer and use your DAW for recording.
