The video consumption process was a binary one - you could either pay a lot of money to watch something (for the majority of third world which largely drove torrentz traffic), or not get to watch it at all! Or agonizingly wait for some TV channel to air it after a long gap. More particularly, Torrentz thrived in an age marked by an "undemocratic" way of content dissemination by the creators. In an earlier post, I pointed out why the present scenario and the future of video consumption is very different than what was the case earlier.

This is the second big loss for the Torrent community, after the arrest of KickAss Torrents owner & shutdown of KickAss website. The site still looks like it used to before, but the search functionality is disabled now, those who try to search torrents are greeted by a Farewell message. Those of you who actively consumed content from it would have noticed that without any prior warning, it disabled its functionality and the site started referring to itself in past tense. Torrentz was founded in 2003 and quickly became one of the most used sites by the Torrent community. We can call it 'Google' of the Torrent world, since Torrentz hosted no torrents of its own, instead, it worked like a Meta-Search engine linking to other sites like KickAss, The Pirate Bay etc. Torrentz was one of the world's largest torrent site, used by millions of users worldwide. Recently the world (the internet enabled) woke up to a very depressing reality - Torrentz, Worlds most used Torrent search engine, voluntarily shut down its service.
